January 25-28, 2017

The Inaugural Oscar Jordan Symposium in honour of the life and work of the late Dr. Oscar Jordan, Endocrinologist, co-founder of the Barbados Diabetes Foundation and the Maria Holder Diabetes Centre for the Caribbean is scheduled to be held January 25-28, 2017. It is a collaborative effort between the Barbados Diabetes Foundation and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The symposium will involve a series of events designed for both the public and health professionals in order to educate and advocate on the multidisciplinary management of diabetes.

The inaugural event will have a special focus on the diabetic foot and will feature speakers from the Caribbean Diabetes Initiative out of New York and contributions local and regional health professionals. The Caribbean Diabetes Initiative’s goal is to advocate and educate about diabetes across the Caribbean and will feature Foot & Ankle Surgeon Dr. Steven Wells and two US-based Barbadian Nurses – Antsey Small and Derline Higgins. The symposium includes a public lecture on January 25 and medical education seminars January 25-28, 2017. Nursing students of the Barbados Community College will benefit from a special seminar on January 26 aimed at building the capacity of student nurses in the area of diabetes. An award will be given in honour of Dr. Oscar Jordan to a young doctor and nurse for their outstanding work in diabetes care.
