From palpitations to chest pain to leg swelling, cardiovascular complaints keep the General Practitioner, Emergency Specialists and other health professionals busy. This CME explores some common symptoms which may suggest cardiovascular disease and the differential diagnoses outside the cardiovascular system. We will focus on the approach to diagnosis and treatment. Presenters include local Cardiologists, Emergency Specialists, Psychiatrist, Internists and others. Doctors, nurses, allied health, mental health professionals & other interested persons are invited to attend. CPE credit is available.
10:00- 10:45 a.m. Palpitations: Dr. Aderemi Soyombo, Cardiologist
The differential diagnosis for palpitations is broad, ranging from anxiety disorders to life-threatening arrhythmias. Dr. Soyombo will discuss the approach to the investigation of palpitations. Red flags will be discussed.
10:45- 11:30 a.m. Syncope: Dr. Stephen Moe, Cardiologist
Fainting is always a dramatic event. Yet it can have a relatively benign cause. When should we be concerned? Dr. Moe will review the approach to the patient with syncope, from the all-important history to advanced investigations such as invasive rhythm monitoring.
11:30 a.m. to 12:30pm – Panel: Chest Pain in the Emergency Setting and GP Clinic. Panelists: Dr. Winston Batson, GP; Dr. Linda Williams, GP; ER Physician – TBA; Dr. Dawn Scantlebury, Interventional Cardiologist.
When patients experience chest pain, the first thing that comes to mind is a Heart Attack! Yet, there are multiple structures within the chest, abdomen and neck that can result in chest pain. On the other side of the spectrum, a heart attack may present without chest pain. How confusing can it get?! The panel will discuss the approach to the patient with chest pain in the ambulatory setting and in the emergency setting. We will discuss clues to a life-threatening differential diagnosis

1:30-2:10 p.m. Shortness of Breath – Dr. Anne-Marie Hassell, Intensivist/ Pulmonologist
Is it asthma? Is it heart failure? Dr. Hassell will discuss the approach to the patient with shortness of breath.
2.10-2.30 p.m. Shortness of Breath: A Primer for Nurses – Tracy Davis, RN
Nurses are often the first point of contact for patients presenting to the emergency room, or patients on the ward. Are you going to direct this patient to the asthma bay? Or are you going to call your doc to assess stat? RN Davis speaks directly to nurses.
2:30-3:00 p.m. Leg Pain/ Claudication: Dr. Nina Yhap, Senior Registrar, Surgery
Barbados is known in some quarters as the amputation capital of the world. Yet this is an avoidable complication of peripheral arterial disease. Dr. Nina Yhap will guide us through the clues to considering the diagnosis of PAD, as well as its investigation and management.
3:00-3:30 p.m. Leg Swelling: Dr. Jocelyn Brookes, Interventional Radiologist
Is that swelling in your obese patient heart failure? Or is it the ever-prevalent venous disease? Dr. Brooks will focus on the diagnosis and management of venous disease along with a discussion of the differential diagnosis.
3:30-4:00 p.m. Cardiovascular Disease & Stress, Janelle Chase-Mayers, Mental Health Consultant
Stress! We all experience it, and some handle it better than others. How does it impact your patient? Is that cardiovascular complaint simply a manifestation of poor stress coping skills?
