Considerations in Cancer Care-Flyer 2018

Integrative medicine is a combination of medical treatments for cancer and complementary therapies to cope with the symptoms and side effects. You may sometimes hear integrative medicine called complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). However, there are no true “alternatives” to cancer treatment. (www. cancer.net). An integrative approach to cancer care treats the disease with surgery, chemotherapy and other tools, while also supporting patients’ strength, stamina and quality of life with evidence-informed therapies. The goal of integrative treatment is to help patients reduce treatment delays or interruptions and get the most out of life. Supportive therapies may include acupuncture, pain management, nutrition therapy, oncology rehabilitation, chiropractic care, naturopathic medicine and therapies.

This CME explores the effect of various treatment modalities and nutrition therapy via the integrated approach. It will look at conventional cancer treatment and ways in which it can be complemented to improve patient outcomes and compliance.  Case studies and perspectives from local surgeons and oncologists will be included.
