Janelle Chase-Mayers has always had a love for sports, exercise and fitness. And it became a natural progression for her to make it part of her life path. While attending Barbados Community College pursuing her Associate Degree in Physical Education at the tender age of 17 in 1999, she was awarded a Div 1 scholarship to play volleyball in the states, and her awareness of health and wellness, sport and fitness grew. From travelling to play sports around the United States, Caribbean and South America, Janelle recognized the need for an athletic facility that would support the national teams and the general population. She continued with her education in the form of a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Wrapped up in those degrees are her love for sports and fitness, with over 40 credit hours of Anatomy and Physiology, weight lifting and training and countless hours as an athlete.
The beauty of sport and fitness is that it draws total strangers, communities and families together, and with that Janelle uses sport to strengthen her relationship with her 6 year old son Tj and her larger family context. In the near future, Janelle is currently enrolled in her PHD program in Creative Systemic Studies in Marriage in Family Therapy, with an emphasis on how Health and Wellness Strategies can improve familial relations and promote growth to a larger community. DR. ALISON BERNARD CHANGING ATTITUDES ABOUT BREASTFEEDING IN BARBADOS

Her Topic: Breastfeeding

Dr. Alison Bernard is of President of the charity, Breastfeeding And Child Nutrition Foundation Of Barbados (BCNF). She founded the charity along with two other colleagues in early 2015 and they became a registered charity in May 2015.

The charity has 11 members made up of doctors, lawyers, nutritionists, nurses, accountants. All women but they would love to recruit some men as breastfeeding affects us all. Their mandate is the promotion, protection and support of breastfeeding as well as to provide practical evidenced based information on nutrition to parents, with an aim to decreasing the NCDs epidemic in Barbados which has begun to grip our children.

They provide support through one on one breastfeeding counseling sessions, as well as provide educational information at their sessions at QEH twice a month. The group is helping to create policy which they hope will make real change for mothers making it easier for them to initiate and maintain breastfeeding. By creating breastfeeding campaigns and engaging with mass media they hope to bring awareness of the lesser known benefits of breastfeeding including its positive effect on intelligence and decreasing the incidence of NCDs.
