Local and regional health and sports professionals will be coming together at the Savannah Hotel on June 30-July, 1 2018 for the “Staying in the Game: From Prevention to Performance” Sports Medicine Conference.
Hosted by the Barbados Sports Medicine Association (BSMA) the goal of this event is to educate athletes, coaches and medical professionals on current best practices in sports medicine and assist in minimizing injury risks to improve athlete management and performance.
Speakers include top local and regional professionals in the sports medicine field including Dean of the new Faculty of Sport at The University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica, Dr Akshai Mansingh. He will be delivering the key note address on “Considerations for the Young Athlete” and other presentations. Also from Jamaica is guest speaker Dr. Olivia Rose, Sports Psychologist who has served on the West Indies Women’s Team. She, along with local Sports Psychologist Dr. June Caddle will look at various psychological aspects of sports and injury. Other topics explored include treatment of injuries, advances in rehabilitation, diagnostic ultrasounds, the Olympic Medical Code, doping, nutrition, strength, conditioning and more delivered by local physicians and allied health professionals including Sports Physicians Drs. Adrian Lorde and Rene Best; Physiotherapists: Dr, Jacqui King, Dr. Phyllis Burnett and Marita Marshall; Dr. Tamara Nancoo, Orthopaedic Surgeon and Dr. Shane Drakes, Physiatrist among other specialists. Athletes, coaches, PE teachers, doctors, nurses, students, other health and sports professionals are all invited to attend.
The BSMA is a non-profit organisation which seeks to make active contributions to the development of sport in Barbados. The current president is Dr. Carl Ward, Sports Physician and the association is served by a number of Medical and Paramedical Professionals all of whom volunteer their time and services for both recreational and professional athletes at local, regional and international events.
