Since 2017, the Barbados Diabetes Foundation has collaborated with the University of the West Indies to honour the legacy of the late Dr. Oscar Jordan via a medical symposium focusing on various aspects of diabetes from a Caribbean perspective.
This year the focus is on “Diabetic Retinopathy”. Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes, caused by high blood sugar levels damaging the back of the eye (retina). It can cause blindness if left undiagnosed and untreated. Both the duration of diabetes and blood sugar control are independent risk factors for severity and progression of diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is more prevalent in older age groups with long-standing disease. This lecture will zone in several aspects of this condition including treatment and prevention.
