Event Brief

The Annual Oscar Jordan Medical Symposium is held to observe the life and work of the late Oscar Jordan, Endocrinologist and co-founder of the Barbados Diabetes Foundation. Dr. Jordan worked tirelessly to promote the highest quality of health care in diabetes, a major problem in Barbados and throughout the West Indies.

The 2019 event aims to highlight the need for a strong emphasis on actively addressing diabetes prevention as an area of national priority. Only such a proactive approach, which invariably will encompass measures to address obesity, metabolic syndrome and healthier lifestyle choices, will curb the tidal wave of diabetes and other NCDs Barbados is experiencing. Though known that the effort should span all ages and generations, a special emphasis will be placed on childhood obesity prevention and the lessons that can be learned from such efforts in Jamaica. Brief presentations will also be made by the Chronic Disease Research Centre, Breast Feeding and Child Nutrition Foundation and other entities.

Dr. Simone Spence received her medical degree from the University of the West Indies in 2004 with a Masters in Public Health in 2008 and is now currently pursuing a Doctorate in Public Health, from the same institution. She is currently the Director of Health Promotion & Protection Branch in the Ministry of Health & Wellness, Jamaica with direct responsibility and oversight for the all health programmes relating to Health Promotion, Disease Prevention/Surveillance, Environmental Health, Nutrition, Waste Management & Veterinary Public Health. She also is a part-time lecturer at the University of the West Indies, Mona campus in the Community Health and Psychiatry department.
She has had 14 years’ experience in Primary Health Care and Public Health in various capacities at the parish, region and National levels. Passionate about Public Health, her career path has led her to service at the national level. Her professional interests focus on different areas of public health including Maternal and Child Health – through the European Union sponsored project, Programme for the Reduction of Maternal and Child mortality (PROMAC) as the Project Coordinator.
Her personal philosophy is embodied by the following motivational quotes and how they reflect in her life:

The Barbados Drug Service in collaboration with the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados presents: “I Didn’t Know That” a free public lecture exploring women and heart health, nutrition and more on Friday, 12 July 2019 at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre (LESC). Featured speakers include Gina Price Lundberg, Cardiologist from the USA and Helene Charlebois, Registered Dietitian and  Obesity Expert from Canada. The public is invited to come early at 5.00pm and participate in the pre-lecture activities which include health checks, sampling, display booth on healthy lifestyles and more. The lecture starts at 7.00pm. This event is a part of Heart of a Woman Symoosia and Exhibition, hosted by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados July 12-14, 2019 at LESC.

 

Damian Cohall, PhD

Dr. Damian Cohall is currently the Deputy Dean (Preclinical Sciences) and a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill. He has profound research interests in Ethnopharmacology and Pharmnocognosy. He has published a number of research manuscripts in this area inclusive of a book entitled “Medicinal Plants of Barbados for the Treatment of Communicable and Non-communicable Diseases” and a co-authored book chapter entitled “Pharmacodynamics – A Pharmacognosy Perspective” in a textbook entitled Pharmacognosy: Fundamentals and Strategy, Elsevier Publishing. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the West Indian Medical Journal.

Dr. Cohall has given numerous presentations on Medical Cannabis locally and around the region. One of his most recent joint research efforts with Dr. Alana Griffith is a published article entitled “Conceptualizing a policy framework for the implementation of medical marijuana in the Caribbean territory of Barbados” in the journal Drug Science, Law and Policy. This research was awarded Best Industry Applied Research at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill’s Research Week 2018. He currently supervises four postgraduate students, two are undertaking medical cannabis research in the areas of Epilepsy and Type 2 Diabetes. Most recently, Dr. Cohall became a member of the International Cannabinoid Research Society.

Dr. Cohall is also the Director of the Bachelor of Health Sciences and the PhD Pharmacology programmes in the Faculty of Medical Sciences. He is a recipient of the Faculty’s Award of Merit for Leadership in Education in 2011 and most recently, he was awarded a Principal’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, University and Public Service in 2018. He is also quite keen on contributing to his direct community and region. He represents his discipline and Faculty on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s Drug and Therapeutic Monitoring (DTC) Committee. Regionally, he has served as Lead UWI Consultant on the Caribbean Export Development Agency’s CARTFUND project to establish regional standards for the Health and Wellness Sector in CARIFORUM territories.

About the event:

Every year, more Barbadian women die prematurely from heart disease and stroke (CVD) than all cancers combined. Yet the average Bajan woman and many medical providers still think that breast cancer is a woman’s worst enemy!

In this symposium, we will bring together women with CVD and public and private sector decision-makers, with the aim of empowering all with the knowledge to address drivers of CVD at home, school and work.

Speakers include local and international experts in cardiology, nutrition, fitness, mental health and workplace wellness.

Attendees will have the opportunity to:

• Learn the signs, symptoms and impact of cardiovascular disease from medical experts
• Exchange ideas with women living and working with Cardiovascular Disease
• Champion change in your institution and community

Vision: Move Barbadians to an aspired quality of life. Create a healthy nation. Change a culture.

 

Aim: Use knowledge of heart disease and stroke in women to mobilise stakeholders to address the drivers of cardiovascular disease in Barbados

 

Outcomes:

Use the global burden of CVD to inform the local impact of heart disease and stroke – especially in women

1. Educate stakeholders on key interventions to reduce the burden of CVD

1. Mobilise stakeholders to  develop an action plan to reduce CVD burden in Barbados
