Facts:

The rate of childhood obesity in children 0-4 years in the Eastern Caribbean doubled from 7.4% – 14.8% between 2000-2010?

 Obese children are more likely to be ill, absent from school due to illness, experience health-related limitations and require more medical care than normal weight children.

 Overweight and obese children are more likely to become obese adults, and have a higher risk of disease, disability and premature death.

 Come out and learn more about the health risks of childhood obesity, Proper Nutrition, Creating healthy meals for children and other measures to reduce the impact of this epidemic.

Parents, Teachers, Caregivers, Nursery Care Professionals are especially invited to attend.

Exploring Wound Care Treatment – Nov 11, Diabetes Centre

AA Laquis Ltd. is the kind sponsor of the “Exploring Wound Care Treatment Workshop” to be held at the Diabetes Centre, Warrens, St. Michael, 11 November 2015 from 530pm-830pm.  Hosted by the Barbados Diabetes Foundation as part of the Diabetes Month Activities, participants will be treated to a live demonstration with the compliments of AA Laquis and their vacuum system. The medical education component will feature Podiatrist Rosamund James presenting on “Management of the Diabetic Foot Wound – A Case Study”. Wound Care Specialist Nurse Veronica Webster will give a nurse’s perspective on “Neuroplastic & Ischemic Wounds” and Dr. Greg Padmore, Surgical Registrar of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital will be exploring “Amputation & Rehabilitation”. This free event is almost at capacity and interested participants are asked to contact us as soon as possible to secure the limited space.

All participants are encouraged to make a donation to the Multidisciplinary Diabetes Intervention Programmes for both adults and children at the Diabetes Centre. Exploring Wound Care Treatment Seminar – Nov 11, 2015 530PM-830PM

bdfIn observation of Diabetes Month, the Barbados Diabetes Foundation will be hosting a Wound Care Seminar on Wednesday, 11 November 2015 from 5.30pm-8.30pm at the Diabetes Centre, Warrens, St. Michael. The aim of this seminar is to explore the issue of Diabetic Foot, Diabetic Ulcers and Limb Saving Surgery from the perspective of the Podiatrist, Wound Care Nurse and Surgeon – all important players in the multidisciplinary approach to Diabetes Care. Podiatrist Rosamund James will be presenting along with Veronica Webster, Wound Care Nurse in addition to a local Surgeon (to be announced). Participants will be given the opportunity to observe a live demonstration of a special vacuum dressing procedure, in addition to the medical presentation. This event is for health professionals ie. doctors, nurses, podiatrists and other involved in wound care treatment. CPE credit will be awarded. This event is free but space is limited. Participants are encouraged to make a monetary donation of their choice to the programmes at the Diabetes Centre to support various aspects of care and intervention programmes for adults and children with Diabetes. The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s International Stroke Day Workshop – “The Neurological Effects of Stroke” will now be held on Sunday, 25 October 2015, from 12.30-6.30PM instead of the previously advertised Monday, 26 October at 8am. The location remains the same at the Courtyard Marriott, St. Michael. Registration Fee: BDS$125 – Physicians; BDS$75 – Allied Health; BDS$50.00 Students. The event has been given a “C-Award” by the Barbados Medical Council. Lunch will be provided.
